Day Before We Go

Air Filter

Getting the motorcycle ready for the trip. Engine oil changed at the dealership before we bought it. I was hoping they changed the air filter also. Went to the dealership Saturday to see everything they had done. No air filter done by them and nothing in their records. The previous owner could have done it but no way of telling.

I checked the labor price to have the dealership change it. $178.00 plus the filter. Filter is $40.00.

I figured I could do it with my YouTube manual and save the 178.00.

It's about a 2 hour process just to get to see if the filter needs to be changed. I am sure a good mechanic could do this in record time of 1 hour and 45 min.  I am no mechanic so I set aside 3 hours for this job.

I bought the filter, cleaned a large area on the work bench, watched YouTube one more time and got to work. Even if the old filter looked brand new I was going to replace it.

I used my 3 hours and then some. The filter did need replaced. The hardest part of the job was getting the electrical connections apart.

I will do the next one.

11 Days

We only have 11 days till we head to Nova Scotia.  I think we have got all the major things in place.  All the camping gear is already packed on Scotty.  Bike maintenance is all done.  Just need to pack some clothes.

We have the dogs and birds taken care of.

I am ready to go NOW!

Final Drive Oil

Changed the final drive oil today.  All 4.2 oz of it.  Easy job.

I used Mobil 1 synthetic 75w-90.  13 dollars per quart but this will last awhile.

The Ride

2006 Honda Goldwing GL1800

We have named it "Scotty".  He came to us with 109000 miles and ready to do some more.

Day Ride

We took off on the wing around 9 am Sunday. Got some breakfast at cracker barrel and headed to Orme TN. Have had Orme on my list to go to since 2016 because of a rally I was in.
We took a back route which looked great on the map. Bad news it turned to a washed out gravel road for about 5 miles. Great for the DR 650 but not so much for the wing. We made it though with very little damage. The fairing on the trunk shook loose. The National Park gave me some duct tape for a quick patch.
Headed home on the back roads of AL, TN and GA.
In total about 120 miles of fun.

Scenic Byways

Our goal on this trip is to stay off the interstates. Easy to do for the first 700 to 800 miles due to the Blueridge and Skyline Parkways. It gets a little more difficult from Harpers Ferry WV north.

The trick was to google "scenic highways and byways " by state. I now have to decide on which of the many routes to take.

Where to Stay?

Hotels, motels, air bnb, camping, and cabins. We are going to camp about every third night. We have a Kelty TN 3 which fits nicely in the wings trunk. There are no reservations anywhere because we have no idea where we will end up each day.

We have found while traveling in the RV that reservations are a mistake and put too much of an agenda on us. Our motto is "Just Wing It". See what I did there.. :)

How to get to Nova Scotia

Our first discussion is how are we going to get there?

  1. Train
  2. Plane
  3. Auto
  4. RV
  5. Motorcycle
  6. Walk
We have looked into flying and making it a destination trip. We would be able to spend two weeks in Nova Scotia and see most of it this way.

Walking and train are out.

RV is being sold so it isn't the best option.

Now we are down to auto and motorcycle.

Auto was in the front running but we decided to buy a Goldwing and make an adventure out of this journey.

Trip to Nova Scotia

Hello Everyone,

This is the spot I will post our experiences of the planning and the trip.
